Residents in parts of Cloncurry are being warned to prepare to leave as a fast-moving bushfire threatens the area.

The Queensland Fire Department issued a Prepare to Leave notice at 8.25am on Friday, October 25, 2024, as the fire continues to spread toward the town.

The warning level has been raised to Watch and Act for the area between Powerhouse Road, Flinders Highway, and Round Oak Road.

The fire, which is burning near the Selwyn Range, is moving quickly towards Cloncurry and conditions could worsen quickly.

“Firefighters are working to control the fire. You should not expect a firefighter at your door,” the QFD stated.

The Landsborough Highway between Cloncurry and Winton has been closed to traffic due to fire and smoke.

The Cloncurry Shire Council has opened its community precinct for those seeking shelter from the advancing fire.

Residents are advised to bring only essentials, as the precinct will provide food, water, Wi-Fi, and activities for families and children.

The council has also opened the Cloncurry Equestian Centre for livestock in need of refuge.

Multiple warnings are in effect for the region, and locals are urged to stay updated by checking the QFD Current Bushfires and Warnings website.
