Cars parked at Townsville Airport have become the latest vehicles to fall victim to criminals, with multiple vehicles targeted in a string of violent break-ins overnight on Sunday.
Photos posted to Facebook show two cars which have had their driver side windows smashed and removed.
The owner of one car said his entire driver’s window was destroyed during the attack.
“Don’t think they took anything, because there’s nothing to take, but now I need to get a new window,” he said.
It is unclear whether anything was stolen from the second car.
Locals said break ins at the airport are becoming more common, and shared their experiences on Facebook.
“My car got broken into at the airport about eight weeks ago in paid parking,” one woman said.
“Window was smashed and cost me $600.”
A Townsville Airport spokesperson said the incident occurred in the “Select” carpark.
“Townsville Airport has a dedicated on-site security team conducting regular patrols of all our facilities, including after hours,” they said.
“Additionally, the airport precinct is covered by a comprehensive CCTV camera network - including in our carparks.
“Townsville Airport works closely with our security partners and Queensland Police on matters regarding the safety and security of the airport and its customers.”
The break-ins are the latest example of the crime running rampant in Townsville, after a mother of three was held at knife-point and forced to give up the keys to her car during a night-time burglary.
Queensland Police were contacted for comment.
