A Townsville cyclist has been given a hero’s welcome as he touched down in his home city after winning one of the most gruelling races in the world.

A LEGENDARY Townsville cyclist has been given a hero’s welcome as he touched down in his home city after winning one of the most gruelling races in the world.

Allan Jefferson, a 54-year-old endurance athlete and air rescue crew officer from Townsville, crossed the finish line in the gruelling Race Across America on Saturday morning, Australian time.

He finished the 4887km epic from San Diego on the West Coast to Annapaolis on the East Coast in 10 days and 15 minutes.

On Thursday, more than 150 people welcomed him home at Townsville Airport.
