Two NT homeless hostels will receive their Good Friday fish for free courtesy of one of the Top End’s largest seafood companies.
The hostels in Darwin and Berrimah, operated by the Salvation Army, receive weekly deliveries of fresh fish from Australian Bay seafoods, giving the residents a valuable hit of protein every week, and the opportunity to learn new skills, including filleting and preparing the fish.
Sally Courtney from the Salvation Army said the weekly deliveries were a “tremendously generous commitment” from the company, which has been making the weekly deliveries for the past three years.
“Most people love to receive and eat fresh fish,” Ms Courtney said.
“A lot of people are not in the position to go fishing, a majority of people only get to eat fresh fish if they buy it at a shop, and fish is expensive.”
General manager of Australian Bay Seafoods Michael O’Brien said the company was “interlaid” with the Darwin community.
“They support us by buying our fish, we support local by buying and refitting our vessels locally,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Supporting those less fortunate is part of our community structure.”
