A NEW app is aiming to make it easier for Tasmanians to buy fresh local produce while supporting hard-hit local producers during the COVID-19 crisis.

Not-for-profit organisation Eat Well Tasmania will on Wednesday launch the free We Eat Local app, which lists hundreds of Tasmanian businesses offering home delivery, click and collect services and in-store shopping for local produce.

With funding from the Health Department, all businesses are being featured on the app for free for the first 12 months.

Businesses must be Tasmanian owned, and range from small scale up to independent retailers such as IGA, Hill St Grocer and Salamanca Fresh.

Eat Well Tasmania state manager Leah Galvin said ordering local produce through the app would aid social distancing and support local producers at the same time.

“We saw that Tasmanians are changing the way they’re shopping, so they’re looking for new options online, and at the same time Tasmanian producers were looking for new ways to connect with customers,” she said.

“From day to day the offerings are changing, so we want to be able to connect people to a one-stop shop of information.”
