Three-month program launched to feed vulnerable Tasmanians during winter

Nothing feeds the soul like a good slice of pizza or a big bowl of pasta — and now vulnerable Tasmanians in need of a feed can access free meals courtesy of some local Italian master chefs.

VULNERABLE Tasmanians will be able to have a free meal delivered twice a week as part of a new food collective to help those struggling through the winter months.

Starting tomorrow, the three-month program is the initiative of Hobart Alderman and Australian Italian Club president Marti Zucco and local restaurateur Simon Robustelli.

Ald Zucco said a range of local chefs would be cooking up to 200 meals a week at the club, to be distributed to homeless and other vulnerable Tasmanians.

“Just about every person who was approached to take part in this project has either committed funds, produce or their time to be part of the initial program which is a positive step forward for success,” he said.

The initiative is being supported with products from Banjos and Doppio Foods Tasmania. Hobart City Mission chief executive officer John Stubley said the meals would “help make the cold, lonely nights that little bit easier”.

“Individuals and families who have never had to seek the support of The Salvation Army and Hobart City Mission are now doing just that,” Mr Stubley said.

“It is heartening to see the community coming together in this way, to help those doing it tough.”
