Through the darkness, Tasmanians are shining their lights of hope and praise.

In support of our dedicated frontline workers, households and businesses across the state have begun shining a light to show their support during the coronavirus pandemic as part of the Mercury and Sunday Tasmanian’s #Shine4thefrontline campaign.

Angela Fell said her family would be shining their lights to support the incredible efforts of front line workers in keeping our community safe.

“They’re risking their own health and the health of their families, working above and beyond in these crazy conditions,” she said.

She said her two children had picked out some candles to light, and they would also be leaving their front porch light on from 8pm.

Their main message to the state’s frontline workers was simple: “you’re all amazing”.

Ms Fell knew all too well the impacts the virus was having, being involved in the transport industry as a director of Cresswell Coaches.

Due to the cancellation of school activities and the halt of Tasmanian tourism, Ms Fell said their only work would now stem from services to and from school for the students of essential workers.

She hoped Tasmanians would heed the messages coming from the government and our healthcare workers to stay home.

“Stay safe at home so that things can go back to normal soon,” she said.

The campaign was being backed by Premier Peter Gutwein, who urged Tasmanians to show their support by shining a light in the darkness.

“I would encourage Tasmanians at this time to get on board,” he said.

“Turn on your lights, light a candle, put a light out the front of your home, and actually demonstrate the support that we have for all of the people who are doing so very much and going above and beyond.”

The government offices at Murray Street have been lit up in blue, and the Hobart City Council lit up fountains at the Railway Roundabout, alongside the Hobart Aquatic Centre and Elizabeth Street mall.

Businesses such as Hobart’s ibis Styles have also shown their support, with the hotel lighting up in a giant heart-shape.
