MULTI-award winning local novelist Heather Rose has found plenty of ways to enrich her isolation and exercise the imagination of aspiring writers.
Ms Rose has kept busy through the pandemic, editing a nonfiction work and researching extensively into the 1700s for her next fictional novel.
The Bruny and Museum of Modern Love author also has shared her skills through intensive online writers’ workshops with a “two-pronged” approach.
“It teaches craft, character development, plot and structure, but it also teaches the psychology of writing a novel, managing fear, gaining courage and mastering commitment,” she said.
Adults from all corners of Australia have tuned in to the sessions, which have been popular enough for her to plan another course for mid-June.
“They’ve got a collection of novels and short stories they haven’t been sure how to progress,” she said.
“Isolation is a rare time for some of us to be able to allocate time to that.”
Though the first intensive online course has wound up, Ms Rose said she was still holding 4pm online reading sessions for children.
The Zoom videos involve Ms Rose wearing eclectic wigs and putting on various accents to read aloud her co-authored children’s book Finding Serendipity, which follows a girl learning to become a writer.
“All these kids have had some beautiful stories they’ve shared with me,” she said.
“It’s been an extraordinary exchange of knowledge and passion for creativity with all my students of all ages.”
