Dark Mofo may have been cancelled but that doesn’t mean you have to spend the winter solstice at home. An entire Hobart hotel could be yours for the night, with the cash going to a good cause.

An entire Hobart hotel is up for auction for one night — the longest night of the year — to raise money for medical research.
All 22 rooms of the Salamanca Wharf Hotel are being auctioned off by the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation as part the COVID-friendly Solstice on Salamanca fundraiser.

RHH Research Foundation chief executive officer Heather Francis said the organisation relied heavily on face-to-face fundraising events, and the coronavirus pandemic had posed some challenges.
So she was delighted to receive a call from the owner of Salamanca Wharf Hotel a couple of weeks ago, offering up the entire hotel in the name of charity, while also hoping to boost staff morale.
The hotel would typically be packed with Dark Mofo guests at this time of year. People can place online bids to stay at the hotel on the night of the Winter Solstice (Sunday, June 21) between now and Thursday June 18.
Other local businesses — including Blue Eye, Syra and Salamanca Fresh — have jumped on-board, auctioning dinner vouchers and gourmet hampers to be used on the night.
Ms Francis said many people had been dying for a night out after being home for so long, and many were keen to belatedly celebrate birthdays and anniversaries that they’d missed celebrating during lockdown.
It is hoped the auction will raise $10,000, which Ms Francis said would go towards funding the next round of medical research grants.
