Gamilaraay woman and award-winning singer Thelma Plum will grace the stage at this year’s Barunga Festival, making her the first woman to headline the Top End event.

Hailing from Brisbane, Plum, 30, will join a star-studded line-up, including Palmerston brothers J-Milla and Yung Milla, as well as up-and-coming rapper Kootsiedon.

It won’t be the first time Plum has featured at the Barunga Festival, with the Queenslander having taken centre-stage pre-pandemic.

“It was honestly one of the best experiences ever, I’d never really experienced anything like it before,” she told this publication.

“We stayed in the community there, and ever since then I have always wanted to go back.

“(Now) I’m doing and I’m so excited.”

As a teenager, Plum started her music career by uploading her tracks to Triple J’s Unearthed platform.

It was in 2019, however, when Plum caught nationwide attention, following the successful launch of her debut album ‘Better in Blak’, which won ‘Best Cover Art’ at the ARIA Music Awards.

Plum has since rolled out a number of other collections, including ‘When Rose Met Monsters’ in 2023 and ‘I’m Sorry, Now Say It Back’ the following year.

Plum has performed in various cities and events throughout her career.

With fond memories of the Top End, Plum said she looked forward to trading the busy metropolitan for a “on country” gig.

“There’s another element of the (Barunga Festival) being really special,” she said.

“The community aspect of it all - there were people and kids playing footy, while bands were playing on the stage, and there were people cooking up a feed.

“It’s a celebration of community and I feel really proud to be a part of that.”

Barunga Festival will run from June 6 to 9.
