POLICE have noticed an interesting trend with more and more people staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crime rates have fallen across the state since Tasmanians were urged to stay home to save lives amid the coronavirus crisis.
Tasmania Police has recorded a 10 per cent drop in crime over the past month.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Jo Stolp said that while it was normal for crime rates to fluctuate, there have been less burglaries, public place assaults and other incidents with more people staying home.
Serious crime has also decreased.
“While dealing with this public health emergency, Tasmania Police remains committed to providing policing services and we will still have a visible presence in our communities,” Actings Assistant Commissioner Stolp said.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Stolp reminded the public that anyone detected by police being away from their primary residence without a reasonable excuse will face COVID-19 related charges under the Public Health Act 1997.
Those charges will be added to the complaints of people in public committing offences.
The rate of business burglaries has remained steady against last year’s figures.
With many business and organisational premises now vacant due to Government restrictions and work-from-home measures, Police have encouraged bolstering security such as CCTV.
