POLICE say speed and alcohol may have contributed to a fatal crash that killed a motorcyclist in Launceston in the early hours of Sunday.

About 12.40am, a 28-year-old man from Kings Meadows was travelling south on Wellington St on a black Kawasaki motorcycle when he collided with a silver Suzuki hatch travelling east on Paterson St.

The car was being used as an Uber at the time and a 25-year-old man, from Mowbray, was at the wheel.

Two passengers in the vehicle were uninjured in the crash and the driver was taken to the LGH with minor injuries.

Tasmania Police, the TFS and Ambulance Tasmania all attended the scene.

The male rider was treated at the scene but died.

Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services examined the scene and the intersection was partially closed for some time.

“Initial investigations are that the motorcycle rider was travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit and may have disobeyed a red light,” police said.

“It is also possible that alcohol was a contributing factor to this crash.”

Police want anyone who saw the motorcycle travelling in the Launceston CBD before the crash to contact Northern Crash Investigation Services.
