TASMANIA’S sea gateway will soon have a new attraction – a six-metre-wide walkway jutting out over the Mersey River to provide a spectacular view of the Spirit of Tasmania ferries as they sail in and out.
The walkway is part of an almost $17 million project to build the city’s new waterfront park precinct which is the centrepiece of its $250 million Living City Project.
In September last year VOS Construction won the contract and the pylons which will hold up the impressive walkway are already under construction.
The park precinct and walkway are expected to be finished by the end of next year.
Living City is the biggest urban renewal project undertaken in regional Tasmania.
Stage One of the project included the construction of the building which now includes Devonport Library, paranaple arts centre, Service Tasmania, the Online Access Centre, an 800-seat convention centre and Providore Place.
The design of the parkland is based around three wide promenades extending from the CBD to the rivers edge.
Promenade one connects the northern end of the Rooke Street Mall out past Mussell Rock to the river mouth.
Promenade two, illustrated here, is an elevated walkway starting with stairs which face the paranaple centre, it will extend along in front of the city’s proposed new hotel over Formby Rd and the rail line and out over the waters edge.
Promenade three will connect the river back up between the paranaple centre and art gallery into market square and Providore Place, eventually leading up to proposed future retail development.
