THE 10th edition of Launceston’s Junction Arts Festival planned for September had been postponed to 2021 due to uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

The festival is one of the key events on Launceston’s festival calendar, transforming the city into a hub of art, music and performance.

Junction was first presented as a one-off event annexed to the 2010 Regional Arts Australia (RAA) Conference and the tenth anniversary was to coincide with the return of the roaming national conference to Launceston.

Artistic Director Greg Clarke announced today that the decision had been made in light of ongoing restrictions on travel and gatherings, and uncertainty as to when they will be lifted.

“We would like to thank the many artists and festival partners we have been working with who were to be showcased in the 10th Anniversary Festival and we will do everything possible to enable them to be a part of Junction Arts Festival 2021,” he said.

Mr Clarke said the Junction team would now focus on delivering an event later this year when restrictions on gatherings are lifted “to unite our community and celebrate Northern Tasmania’s unique cultural offerings, artistic and culinary”.

RAA executive director Ros Abercrombie said the RAA conference and Junction were united with their local, national and global community as they watch pandemic unfold.

“We stand together with the artists, performers, event staff and audiences across the world whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted by this unprecedented situation,” she said.

Both events will be rescheduled to go ahead in September 2021, with a focus on bringing people together and building community engagement.

Information about the 2020 Junction event will be released in the coming months.
