RESPONSE to night-time missions will be improved for Tasmania’s emergency rescue teams thanks to new hi-tech vision goggles.

The state’s rescue helicopter service has purchased three US-manufactured white phosphor night vision goggles at a total cost of $58,480. The military-grade aviation goggles are the most advanced on the market, providing the highest image clarity and best lowlight response available.

First class constable Tim Donovan said the goggles provided a much clearer vision than previous models.

“It will give us the ability to see further and give us a picture of the area in any situation,” he said.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Tasmania chairman Tony Harrison said the goggles provided the highest level of enhanced safety on night rescue missions, particularly in remote and extreme conditions.
