Tennant Creek High School principal Gavin Khan resigns

The principal of a remote NT high school has resigned after just 12 months at the helm.

A Territory principal has resigned after a 14-month stint at Tennant Creek High School.

In a letter sent to TCHS’ families on Tuesday, Gavin Khan said his final day at the school would be on Friday unless “extreme weather conditions” prevented safe travel.

Mr Khan joined the school in January last year after his time at the helm of Alpurrurulam School.

“I have absolutely enjoyed living and working in Tennant Creek and found the school and town a great place to be,” he wrote.

“I want to thank students, families, and community members and organisations for your support and kindness during my term at Tennant Creek High School.”

Mr Khan said arrangements to fill his vacated role were underway, as well as “a few other staff changes”.

The school is currently advertising for generalist, home economics, Health/PE, science, and STEM secondary teachers.

When Mr Khan took on the top role at TCHS, the school welcomed his background in driving community-led change and improving student outcomes.

TCHS’s attendance rate in 2023 was 49 per cent, up from 44 per cent in 2022.

At the Alpurrurulam School, the career educator held roles as a classroom teacher and ICT coordinator.

He also worked across the New South Wales and South Australian education systems.
