Snow hits low-lying areas of Hobart

Get the gloves out.

Tasmanians are bracing for a chilly start to May as the state will be hit with a cold snap, with snow expected to fall this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology have forecasted frost and snow in certain parts of the state this week, with temperatures expected to drop below average for this time of year.

“It’s gonna be a fairly wet week for the west of the state with a westerly wind for most of the week,” BOM senior meteorologist Michael Conway said.

“On Wednesday, a fairly strong cold front will come through and we’re going to get showers statewide.

“Thursday will be probably the best weather wise day of the week with quite light winds, clearer skies but possible frost around in elevated parts around the state, so the first real frosty day for the year so far,” he said.

The cold temperatures are expected to last until Sunday evening, potentially leading into Monday next week.

“On Friday, we get another cold front and that’s when the cold weather sets into the weekend,” Mr Conway said.

“The weekends are probably going to be quite cold for this time of year with maximum temperatures for instance, in Hobart looking at 12C on Saturday.

“There will be snow level down to about 700 metres about the south of the state during Saturday into Sunday so there could be some snow on the southern mountains.”

The BOM have issued a strong wind warning for the far North West coast on Tuesday which could mean a choppy trip through the Bass Strait.

“There will probably be gale warnings on Wednesday as the cold front moves through,” Mr Conway said.

“There’s also a low pressure system about the south of the states that usually makes up the winds.

“It looks windy around Bass Strait on Wednesday.”
