A Tasmanian firefighter has been stood down after being charged with possessing child abuse material.

The 48 year old firefighter was a volunteer of a southern Tasmanian brigade, but it has not yet been revealed exactly which one.

He was charged after a joint operation by Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police and was immediately stood down.

“This is distressing news, and well being services are being made available to TFS staff and volunteers as required,” Tasmania Fire Service acting chief officer Jeremy Smith said.

“It is not appropriate for us to comment further as the matter is before the courts.”
