Fire bugs charged

Friday, December 17

Two men and a woman have been charged after a ute and truck were set on fire.

Tasmania Police said about 2.40am Wednesday a Toyota HiLux ute was deliberately set alight in a driveway of a Snug house.

The fire inflicted about $65,000 in damage.

On Thursday about 2.30am an Isuzu truck was torched following a break-in at a business in Stanton Place, Cambridge.

“The truck was partially destroyed, and severe smoke (damaged) the building and contents with a minimum value of $120,000,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.

Investigations resulted in charges against a 27-year-old Campania man, and a 26-year-old woman and 39-year-old man from Dodges Ferry.

Charges included unlawfully setting fire to property, burglary and stealing.

Police alleged the fires were believed to have been targeted.

The trio has been bailed to appear at the Hobart Magistrates Court.

Man charged over alleged armed robbery in Mowbray

Friday, December 17

A 37-year-old man from Newnham, in the state’s North, has been arrested and charged over an alleged aggravated armed robbery in Mowbray on Thursday night.

Tasmania Police allege about 6pm, the man attended a residence at Mowbray and stole items including drugs and money.

The resident of the property was not injured and did not want to make a formal report to police in relation to the matter.

During the investigation on Friday, police have recovered a .22 calibre rifle and a stolen motorcycle.

The man has been charged with aggravated armed robbery and several firearms related offences. He was detained to appear before an out of hours session at the Launceston Magistrates Court

Police believe the incident on Thursday was targeted and the people involved were known to each other.

Tasman Bridge delays

Thursday, December 16

UPDATE: The earlier bus crash is now clear from the Eastern approach to the Tasman Bridge.

Motorists are asked to be patient as it may take some time for traffic congestion to clear.

No serious injuries were reported.

INITIAL: Police warn the public there will be traffic delays as two trucks crash on Hobart’s Tasman Bridge.

Police are on the scene of the crash involving two Metro buses on the Eastern approach to the bridge.

The far Left lane is blocked and disrupting to traffic.

Motorists are asked to travel via the Bowen Bridge if possible.

Fatal motorbike Crash – Sprent

Thursday, December 16

A woman has died on the scene of a crash between a motorcycle and ute on Castra Road, Sprent overnight.

Police were called to the scene at 8.25pm where the rider of the motorcycle died at the scene.

The driver of the ute was not injured but was taken to the Mersey Community Hospital where he was treated for shock and underwent a mandatory blood test.

Castra Road was closed for three hours while crash investigators assessed the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Police would like to remind drivers to drive to the conditions and maintain a proper lookout while driving.

Crash Sandy Bay

Wednesday, December 15

Police have responded to a rolled car on Regent Street at Sandy Bay this morning.

The car which ended up on its roof blocked the road as emergency services cleared the scene.

It is understood there were no serious injuries.

The road was cleared shortly before 11am.

Youths arrested over hammer, machete incident

Tuesday December 14

10.20pm: Two youths have been arrested and two people treated by paramedics for injuries sustained during a disturbance at a Kingston shopping centre.

Tasmania Police said multiple triple-0 calls had been received about 8.30pm from members of the public about the incident at the Kingston Plaza Shopping Complex.

Police said members of the public had reported two youths, armed with a hammer and a machete, were acting aggressively towards patrons and had assaulted a member of the public.

Multiple police units arrived on scene and about 9pm two youths were taken into custody where they are assisting police with inquiries.

Two members of the public sustained non life-threatening injuries during the incident and received treatment at the scene from paramedics.

Anyone who witnessed the incident was being asked to phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Serious excavator accident

Monday, December 13

8pm: A 33-year-old Longford man has been flown to the Launceston General Hospital with a serious leg injury.

Railton Road has reopened following the incident near Great Bent Road.

5:52pm: The Westpac Rescue chopper has been tasked to a serious excavator accident in North Tasmania where a man is being treated by paramedics.

Emergency services are at the scene on Railton Road near Great Bent Road between Latrobe and Railton.

Railton Road has been closed and drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

Rosetta house fire

Wednesday, December 8

Tasmania Fire Service were called to a vacant property on the Eastern Shore overnight after it went up in flames.

Crews from Glenorchy and Bridgewater were called to the Katoomba Crescent home around midnight and were able to put out the blaze within an hour and a half.

Fire investigators will return to the scene today to determine its cause.

Zeehan highway closure

Monday, December 6

The Zeehan Highway north of Yolande River between the Anthony Road and Lyell Highway junctions will be closed for at least one day this week as workers from State Growth attempt to clean up a landslide.

The work which will take place between 9:00am and 3:00pm will include removing debris from the road which fell earlier this year in September.

Anyone travelling between Zeehan and Queenstown will need to make a detour through Strahan which is expected to add another 40 minutes to the trip.

A spokesman from State Growth said the department will be working with contractors to minimise disruption for commuters.

“After the completion of this work and a geotechnical inspection, it is hoped that the Highway will be able to fully open and function normally.”
