Youth charged with armed robbery at Newnham IGA supermarket

A 17-year-old male youth has been charged by Tasmania Police and is expected to appear in court this morning in relation to an alleged armed robbery in the state’s North last night.

A 17-YEAR-old male youth has been charged by Tasmania Police and is expected to appear in court this morning in relation to an alleged armed robbery in the state’s North last night.

The youth is alleged to have entered the Newnham IGA supermarket at 5.40pm armed with a knife before demanding money and fleeing with a quantity of cash.

The staff member working at the supermarket did not receive any injuries.

The youth was detained to appear in an out-of-hours court sitting this morning.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed a male acting suspiciously in the Newnham area last night to contact the Launceston Criminal Investigation Branch.

The alleged offender was described by police as wearing a black Adidas jumper, blue Adidas cap, black track pants, and carrying a black backpack. He was seen riding a BMX bike near George Town Rd, Newnham.
