A WOMAN travelling in a taxi with her carer has died after a highway pile-up in which the cab was hit from behind.
The five-car crash happened on Launceston’s Southern Outlet.
Police were called to the crash under the Westbury Rd overpass about 8.15am.
It occurred in the north-bound lane when a number of vehicles slowed in heavy traffic.
“A taxi that was heading north collided with the rear of one of the vehicles, pushing it into another vehicle,” police said.
“The taxi, containing a 53-year-old female passenger and her carer, was struck from behind.
“The woman was transported to the Launceston General Hospital, where she died several hours later.”
Crash investigation officers examined with scene, with a report being prepared for the coroner.
Acting Inspector Nick Clark, of Launceston Police, urged motorists to drive to the conditions and leave enough distance to allow them to stop safely in case of any emergency situation.
