INCUMBENT members and would-be politicians have hit the campaign trail running, with independent MP Andrew Wilkie first out of the gate to confirm he will be seeking re-election.

The Member for Clark, formerly Denison, ruled out any preference deals either before or after the election and that he had found this gave him greater power.

“I’ve discovered I can have as much or more influence in Canberra without a deal with anyone,” he said.

“In the Turnbull/Morrison Government I don’t have a deal but over the last several months I’ve been able to deliver some $60m for the electorate.

“As a well regarded independent, I enjoy access to ministers and governments that opposition and even government backbenchers don’t enjoy.”

ROLLING COVERAGE AS THE ELECTION GETS UNDER WAY

Mr Wilkie, who is anticipated to retain his seat, said it would be “very arrogant” of anyone to say they expect to win.

“Clearly in Australia there is an unprecedented level of dismay with politics and politicians and political parties,” he said.

“I go into this election, admittedly with a healthy margin, but with the full knowledge that I need to work hard to convince the community to vote for me again.”

He said the issues for Clark were much the same issues facing the rest of the country.

“Governments still aren’t being fair and looking after the most disadvantaged members of the community,” he said.

“We’re a fabulously wealthy country and it beggars belief we still have thousands of people on public housing waiting lists, that we still have people waiting years for surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital and an under resourced education system.”
