What Hobart beaches are open after sewage leak

Many popular Hobart beaches are off limits to swimmers after health authorities issued a warning due to a sewage spill. Check out the full list.

Popular beaches at Sandy Bay and Howrah are not safe for swimmers, health officials warn, after a “disappointing” sewage leak that TasWater has blamed on the Cadbury chocolate factory.

The Department of Health issued a notice on Thursday night confirming that the Cameron Bay Sewage Treatment Plant at Berriedale had failed, resulting in sewage entering the river.

A Mondelez International spokeswoman said community health and safety and protecting the environment were the company’s “utmost priorities”.

The Derwent Estuary Program has updated its beach watch following the spill with the latest pollution warnings.

It is advised for swimmers to avoid for today with pollution likely.
