As temperatures are set to soar well above average this week, weather authorities are concerned about increased fire danger throughout the state.
While it’s technically not a heatwave, Tasmania can expect to bask in temperatures in the low to mid 20s.
Peter Robertson took his three children to Long Beach on Monday to enjoy some of the sunshine ahead of the warmer weather.
While in the process of relocating back to Hobart from Canberra, the father said the family is going to have an easy week.
“We’re just going to go down to the park down the road, have a barbecue with the kids, have a play, kick a ball around and explore the suburb of Sandy Bay and look at some of the local attractions,” he said.
The warmer weather comes after the state experienced chilly conditions at the start of the week, with Launceston and Hobart dropping down to two degrees overnight into Monday morning.
Several locations dropped below zero, with Liawenee recording the coldest morning at -6.6C.
“Very wintry conditions but temperatures are warming this week with the hottest day likely to be Thursday with the maximum temperatures reaching the low to mid 20 for much of Tasmania, which is eight to 12 degrees above average for this time of year,” Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Brooke Oakley said.
“We’re getting some very warm air moving eastwards across mainland Australia and some north-westerly winds that is going to push that air over Tasmania.
“It starts to warm up right from Monday, getting slowly warmer, right through until the hottest day on Thursday, and the generally above average temperatures are actually going to continue for most of this month.”
While its pleasant weather for Tasmania this time of year, she said it’s important to note there will be strong and gusty winds which will coincide with the warmer temperatures.
“We probably are going to have elevated fire dangers,” she said.
“On Friday and Saturday, some districts in Tasmania are likely to reach high fire danger. This is one of the first periods of the season where we’ll have those elevated fire dangers.”
Ms Oakley said September is early to have elevated fire dangers.
“Usually we don’t start until October,” she said.
“With the potential for El Nino developing and the long term forecast outlooks to be a warmer than average end to the year and drier than average end to the year. Something that we need to be concerned about, is the increase in fire dangers this season.
“There will be some showers about Western Tasmania at times, but very little rainfall for the rest of the state for this week so it’s going to be dry as well as warm and windy.”
