The state’s beaches will be brimming with colourful bathers and sandcastles as Tasmanians take a plunge to cool down from the scorching heat on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted nearly 30°C heat in Hobart and Launceston,

with other parts of the state expected to have temperatures in the mid 20s.

Despite feeling like a quintessential summer’s day, rain will blanket the state later in the day in true Tasmanian fashion.

“Sunday is the warmest day of the week and is also the end of the settled weather so we’re starting to see some showers and rain developing later in the day and then a wet day on Monday,” Senior meteorologist Brooke Oakley said.

“We’ve got a warm north-easterly air stream so that’s why we’re going to see temperatures in the mid to high 20s.

“But there is a trough over Victoria and that’s starting to extend down towards Tasmania, so we’ll see some rain or showers developing about the West during the day on Sunday and then moving across the rest of the state in the evening.”

Showers and rain will continue on Monday until the trough moves to the east later in the day.

“When the trough moves away, we see cooler and drier south to south easterly winds develop so that’s why the temperatures drop off so much from Sunday where it’s warm to Monday where it’s cooler,” Ms Oakley said.

“There is a weak cold front across on Wednesday so showers again mainly about the West of the state and then some more settled weather towards the end of the week on Thursday and Friday.”

The North East of the state including the Tamar Valley can expect strong gusty winds from Monday evening into early Tuesday.

South Hobart mum Angela Proposch and nine-year-old daughter Ruby plan to make a splash at the beach before rain and cooler weather sets in.

“We came to the beach the other day when it was cold and Ruby and her friend got in. You just have to embrace the weather when you’re in Tassie,” Ms Proposch said.

“We’ll probably still keep going to the beach next week, but on Monday we’re going to go to the squash centre in Bellerive and be indoors to avoid the rain.”

Ruby said her favourite thing about going to the beach is “swimming to the pontoon”.
