Ben O’Brien and Sam Treloar are co-directors of Moonah’s Rebel at Heart Hair Boutique and have just been voted as Tasmania’s best hairdressers by Mercury readers.

Mr O’Brien said he gave Mr Treloar a cut about nine years ago and soon after the pair were working together.

They’ve worked for a combined 25 years in the industry and recently rebranded and relocated their boutique due to popular demand.

“It’s been a lot of hard work to get where we’ve got to,” Mr O’Brien said.

“It takes a team to get to where we are today. We started out as a team of four many years ago and now we’re a team of 14 in a bigger space.

“We’re very grateful for the staff we have with us, they’re hard workers and we’re a big family.

“The key is to appreciate your peers, look after your staff and deliver the best service possible.”

Mr O’Brien said his mother Marianne launched the original business and he’d learnt the trade from her.

The job quickly became a lifelong passion.

“Meeting people and looking after clients is what I love to do,” he said.

“We do a lot of weddings and special events. We love glamming up brides and people for any special occasion, on top of keeping our clients and customers happy and making them feel welcome at anytime.”

Mr O’Brien said the pair were honoured to be recognised for their work in an industry where rival businesses can clash.

“It’s a very competitive. We need to be kind to other hairdressers and salons.

“Be appreciative and respectful, we’re all here trying to do the best we can.”
