VISITORS to Tasmania with a thirst for the local brew will be toasting the new Beer Tourism Plan.

Premier Will Hodgman today announced the State Government would pour $250,000 in the Tasmanian Beer Tourism Plan — along with $100,000 from the Brewers Association — to promote and bolster the industry.

“Now, just one click away, is an extensive guide to local breweries, tours, tastings, festivals, events and sales, following the launch of the Tasmanian Beer Trail website today,” he said in a statement.

“This will capitalise on the emerging tourism niche, which attracted more than 125,000 travellers in the year to March, according to the latest Tasmanian Visitor Survey.”

“It will also further build the profile of our established breweries like Cascade and Boag’s, while shining a spotlight on our many craft and micro brewers across the state.

He said the Beer Trail would be promoted in a targeted advertising campaign and through the Brewers Association and Craft Brewing Industry ahead of the major events season.

“That season starts in spring with Micro Brew Fest, followed by Beer Lovers Week and the world-class Tasmanian International Beerfest in Hobart and Launceston’s Esk Beerfest next year,” the Premier said.

Moo Brew head brewer Dave McGill said now was the time to seize the moment, with the craft beer industry going from strength to strength.

“When we started about 10 years ago it was just us and Hazzards (Ale) and that was it,” he said.

“Now there’s 19 registered breweries in Tasmania, which per capita would be the most of any state in Australia.”
