Sir Richard Branson’s cruise line Virgin Voyages has announced one of their luxury ships will be visiting Tasmania on a number of adults only trips.
The newest ship in Virgin’s four-ship fleet, the Resilient Lady, will make Melbourne its home port over the summer of 2023-2024 after sailing from her northern base of Athens next year.
The announcement is said to be a coup for the Australian cruise ship industry which is believed to have lost around $10bn over the pandemic and suffered reputational damage following the Ruby Princess tragedy.
Visits to Burnie and Hobart feature in nine of the 12 cruises planned for the Resilient Lady ranging from two to 14 day itineraries available to book from 11 December 2023 to 27 March 2024.
These include the Pacific Fjords & Tasman Treasures and the Aussie MerMaiden with prices starting at $357 and the ship accommodating up to 2700 passengers.
Virgin Voyages president Nirmal Saverimuttu said the cruises would offer a ‘superyacht style’ experience for passengers with Michelin starred chef-driven cuisine, on-deck activities including yoga and boxing as well as its very own tattoo parlour.
“We’ve got hammocks on all our balconies, sunrise and sunset outdoor yoga decks, outdoor fitness areas,” said Mr Saverimuttu.
“We will be probably the newest and most modern ship to be calling in Australia by the time we come next year because the ship will be essentially almost brand new.”
The Resilient Lady will also offer a “shake for champagne” service that allows passengers to shake their smartphone anywhere on board to order a bottle of bubbly.
Sir Richard, who founded the Virgin Blue airline in 2000, said the launch of the cruise set to sail across the Tasman Sea was an exciting milestone for his brand.
“Australia has a very special place in my heart and we can’t wait for Australians and New Zealanders to meet our Resilient Lady and experience all that she has to offer in true Virgin style.” said Sir Richard.
Bookings for the summer 2023-2024 season are now on sale with other itineraries visiting Sydney and New Zealand’s north and south islands.
