Virgin offers flights from Hobart, Launceston from just $75: But you’ll have to go via Melbourne

Virgin is continuing its comeback after coronavirus with flights out of Hobart and Launceston now on sale from just $75 — but there’s one big catch. DETAILS >>

Queensland government launches bid for Virgin Australia

VIRGIN Australia has released 125,000 cheap airfares as part of a massive ‘comeback’ sale to celebrate the resurrection of the airline — but the options from Tasmania remain limited.

The airline’s 12-hour ‘Because Everyone Loves a Comeback’ sale has now begun, ending at 11pm tonight with tickets from $75 and business class fares from $250.

‘Ready for take off’: Treasurer applauds Virgin deal

It coincides with the announcement that an extra 17 domestic routes will restart by August 4.

Flights from Hobart, Launceston, Newcastle, Darwin, Alice Springs, Hamilton Island, Maroochydore, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Proserpine and Mount Isa will take off.

But it seems not all direct routes have returned for Tasmanians, with every cheap fare on offer only being offered via Melbourne.

Melbourne is once again considered a COVID-19 hot spot, with more than 300 active coronavirus cases, so the thought of Tasmanians travelling through the state with high levels of community transmissions will leave a sour taste.

The cheap fares

  • Hobart > Melbourne: From $99 one way
  • Hobart > Adelaide (via Melbourne): From $159 one way
  • Hobart > Brisbane, Canberra and Gold Coast (via Melbourne): From $169 one way
  • Launceston > Melbourne: From $75 one way
  • Launceston > Adelaide: From $159 one way (via Melbourne)
  • Launceston > Brisbane: From $169 one way (via Melbourne)

Virgin Australia has also introduced additional safety and wellbeing measures to minimise risks associated with COVID-19, and to help guests feel comfortable and confident when flying.

Virgin Australia is also waiving any change fees for bookings made between today and September 30, 2025, including unlimited changes to booking dates.
