HOBART will see its first “virtual restaurant” when online food-ordering and delivery service Uber Eats launches on Wednesday.
More than 30 of the city’s most popular eateries have already partnered with the smartphone app, which delivers anything from the menu to your door for a fixed fee of $6.95.
But owner of Hobart restaurant Pilgrim Coffee and partner in Standard Burgers and Queens Fines Pastries Will Priestley has put a fresh spin on online ordering.
Partnering with Pilgrim Group executive chef Clinton Gresham, the pair have started up Holey Cheesus — a delivery-only toasted sandwich shop.
“We’re launching a virtual restaurant, which means you can’t go there,” Mr Gresham said. “It’s in a commercial kitchen space so you only access it through Uber Eats.
“The idea came about after some of my friends in Melbourne told me 85 per cent of their trade came from Uber Eats.
“It allows us to put a product out there without setting up an entire venue. “
Mr Priestley’s other cafes will also be listed on the app. Coffee, doughnuts, and jaffles are among some of the treats that can be ordered.
“I think it will take a while for it to hit its peak in Hobart but if it takes off it could create new roles in the business,” he said.
“I don’t think the experience can replicate going to a cafe or restaurant but it will be popular during winter.”
Uber Eats has taken the mainland by storm, with more than 8000 restaurants across Australia on the platform.
Local residents can download the Uber Eats app and order from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week.
To celebrate the launch, first-time users will be offered a $10 discount on their order. To redeem, enter UEHOBART.
