The Mercury cast the net out far and wide in search of Tasmania’s best fish and chips and a little van on the East Coast has claimed the top title.
Hundreds of eateries from across the state were nominated from boat-to-table shacks to city pubs, but Triabunna’s Fish Van was named the best by readers for their succulent seafood and crispy batter.
Cara Wilson has owned the popular joint for eight years and said each and every day just gets busier.
“Over summer I can cook up to 70kg of fish a day.”
“From November to the end of Easter it’s flat out and Sunday is our busiest day every week - it doesn’t matter if it’s raining or the sun is shining.”
A popular spot for those visiting Maria Island, tourists and locals alike can be spotted digging into the Fish Van’s famous seafood basket and scrumptious flake and gummy shark - a staple that has customers coming back for seconds.
Sitting just a few metres from a fleet of boats on the esplanade the eatery has access to the freshest seafood available - a perk Wilson commends the small business’s stunning success for.
“We cook it with love and every piece is fresh from local waters.”
