TRAFFIC signals at intersections throughout Hobart’s CBD will change this week in an effort to reduce traffic congestion in the capital city.

From Tuesday, changes will be made at the intersections of Davey St and Macquarie St, Molle St and Macquarie S, Harrington St and Macquarie St, Argyle St and Macquarie S, and Murray St and Davey St.

Infrastructure Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the changes would include the installation of new right-hand turn signals to allow through traffic to continue straight ahead while right-turning vehicles waited for pedestrians to cross.

“Changes will also be made to the timing of the signals at the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Davey Street and the Southern Outlet to allow better co-ordination with other traffic signals along Davey Street,” Mr Rockliff said.

The government has recently taken ownership of Macquarie and Davey streets two years after announcing its intention to do so.

“The Hodgman Liberal government took a comprehensive plan to address traffic congestion to the election and step-by-step we will identify and develop further improvements along these key corridors,” Mr Rockliff said.

The government has been criticised for a lack of action on Hobart’s traffic congestion, with the RACT last year convening its own panel to develop a 30-year plan for improved flow.

The Australian Automobile Association’s first congestion report, released last year, found that

the average speed for drivers travelling into Hobart has dropped from 65.5km/h to 65km/h since 2014.

People driving from Sorell to the CBD were the worst hit with their journey during the morning peak increasing by 2.2 minutes.
