THE span of the $1 million Brooker Bridge was lifted into place last night without a hitch and all associated road closures this weekend have been cancelled.

Brooker Avenue was opened to traffic just before noon today with all traffic flowing smoothly beneath the new pedestrian and bicycle footbridge.

“We are ahead of schedule, with the main walkway of the bridge lifted safely into place,” a Hobart City Council spokesman said.

“The next stage is the installation of the architectural canopy in autumn 2019.

“We will provide further details closer to the date.”

Brooker Ave between Liverpool and Brisbane streets was meant to be closed for most of the weekend, and would have been partially reopened tomorrow from 11am to help drivers heading to the AFLW match being held at North Hobart Oval.

The efficient work last night means these closures are no longer required.

The council and VEC Civil Engineering will continue works on the bridge, with Bathurst St to be closed two nights a week for crane-lifting work until the end of the month and the footpath above the retaining wall on the Glebe side of the Brooker Highway will be closed until early March.

It is the second bridge built in Hobart this year after the span of the Bridge of Remembrance was lifted into place last month.

The bridge will form another link between Bathurst St and the Queens Domain, as part of the city’s $300 million, 10-year capital works plan.

It will be a minimum of 3m wide, predominantly steel and have ramp access for use by pedestrians, cyclists and other mobility device users.

The bridge has been designed by local firm Terroir Architects in collaboration with national and international architects.
