Clarence Councillor and former MLC Tony Mulder says he hopes to provide a sensible, moderate choice for voters as an independent candidate in Franklin.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced on Wednesday Tasmanians would head to the polls a year early.
Mr Mulder, who served as Legislative Councillor for Rumney from 2011 to 2017, said the Liberal Government was in chaos and Labor was beset by infighting.
“For Franklin and for the whole of the state, it’s about good government,” he said.
“Clearly neither of the parties even in majority can provide stable government. Therefore it requires some moderate, centrist independents. Time to put the adults in charge.
“Stability requires cross-benchers to moderate the chaos, and bring common sense back to the parliament. That means the government will be stable. If the cross bench has sensible, experienced people who are more interested in policy than power.”
Mr Mulder is the third independent to declare themselves in Franklin, along with former Labor MP David O’Byrne and Kingborough Deputy Mayor Clare Glade-Wright.
