A three-year-old boy has been killed in a fire that tore through a shed in Tasmania’s north, leaving another four-year-old-boy seriously injured.
Police and emergency services were called to the fire on Verdun St, Mowbray shortly after 1.30pm.
The shed, located at the back of the property, was fully alight when police and Tasmania Fire Service crews arrived minutes later.
A toddler was found deceased, and another young child was taken to Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries.
A female adult was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police declined to comment on the relationship between the female and the young children and said that the two children involved in the fire are known to each other, but not siblings.
Inspector Nathan Johnston said the family involved are ‘understandably distraught’.
“It’s a tragic set of circumstances,” he said.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with everyone affected.”
Due to the nature of the investigation Police said they were unable to comment on the circumstance that lead to the death of the toddler, including what the children were doing in the shed.
Members of the public reported sounds of an explosion on social media however police also declined to comment on whether the noise was related to the incident.
Verdun St was cordoned off by marked and unmarked police cars from 1.30pm.
A witnesses on the scene saw Police entering the property from the garage for ongoing investigations about 5.30pm.
TFS fire and forensic investigators will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
