Three people dead after two separate crashes at opposite ends of Tasmania

Three people have died in two separate crashes in Tasmania on Saturday.

Episode 1 - On The Road: 'It took my breath away'

THREE people have died after two separate crashes at opposite ends of the state in a horror day on our roads.

Police and emergency services at 2.30pm on Saturday responded to a crash near the intersection of Bridgenorth Road and Long Plains Road at Bridgenorth.

Detective Inspector Kim Steven said a blue Corolla and a white Hilux ute collided on Long Plains Rd.

As a result, the driver and front seat passenger in the Corolla, a man and woman both in their 80s and both from Newnham, died at the scene.

The driver of the Hilux, a 19-year-old man from Rosevale and his 20-year-old male passenger from Riverside, were taken to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fatal crash in the North came as a woman died after a two-car crash on the Huon Highway at Huonville, near the entrance to the Waste Transfer Station at about 11.25am.

Inspector Troy Morrisby said a white sedan, coming from the waste transfer station, and a blue utility towing a trailer collided.

He said the driver of the sedan, a 50-year-old woman from Waterloo, died at the scene while a 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in the car was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital and was in a stable condition on Saturday.

The driver of the ute, a 30-year-old man from Huonville, was uninjured.

The road was partially blocked between Huonville and Franklin for some time.

Inspector Morrisby said speed, alcohol and drugs were not a factor, but investigations were ongoing. “It’s a timely reminder for all drivers to take care on the roads, especially when entering a major road like the Huon Highway,” he said.

“If people just take the time before they go on a journey to think about the consequences of what would happen if they didn’t come home and that might give them a second to reflect on their driving behaviour.”

On August 13, a 41-year-old Huntingfield father and his two-year-old daughter were also killed when their black sedan and a bus collided on Algona Rd at Kingston.

“We’re encouraging drivers to take some ownership of their driving because 99 per cent of crashes are sadly avoidable,” Inspector Morrisby said.
