Australia's tourism industry still 'a long way from fixed'

TOURISTS from Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have quickly snapped up vouchers to explore Tasmania in a program designed to stimulate the state’s ailing tourism and hospitality operators.

More than 2000 registrations were received within 10 minutes of the program opening on Friday morning, with 10,000 people registered within the first four hours.

The Tassie Holiday Voucher program is a joint initiative of state and federal governments and has been targeted towards states considered low-risk for Covid-19.

Tourism Minister Sarah Courtney said the program would provide residents of these interstate markets the chance to redeem a $300 voucher towards their holiday to Tasmania between November 4 and December 31.

Once registrations are complete on November 2, 10,000 vouchers will be issued via a ballot, with successful recipients booking their travel and redeeming the voucher discount through an online marketplace.

“Tasmania’s vibrant tourism industry adds millions to our economy and supports thousands of jobs around the state, particularly in regional areas and this voucher program will bring attention to our spectacular products and destinations to encourage visitation,’’ Ms Courtney said.

Tasmania’s border is set to fully reopen to mainland Australia and the world on December 15, with the state’s fully vaccinated rate tipped to reach 90 per cent by then.
