ALL things being equal, Hobartians should wake up tomorrow with a new bridge.
The span of the $1 million Brooker Bridge will be lifted tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning with several road closures in place during the weekend.
It will be the second bridge built in the state’s capital this year after the span of the Bridge of Remembrance was lifted into place last month.
To complete the first stage of the project, there will be a full closure of Brooker Ave between Liverpool and Brisbane streets and the adjoining section of Bathurst St, Bathurst St between Campbell St and Brooker Ave, and the intersection of Edward St and Brooker Ave. These full closures will operate from 7pm today to 11am Sunday.
Between 11am and 5pm on Sunday there will be two lanes open southbound and northbound on Brooker Ave between Liverpool and Brisbane streets so people can get to the NAB AFLW match between North Melbourne and Carlton at North Hobart Oval.
Full closures will resume at 5pm until 6am on Monday.
A Hobart City Council spokesman said the recent smoky haze which had engulfed Hobart due to the Tasmanian bushfires would not hinder the operation.
The bridge will form another link between Bathurst St and the Queens Domain.
