One dead, three injured in three-car crash
Update, Saturday, November 27, 5pm:
THE distraught mother of a teenager who died in a crash north of Hobart on Saturday was consoled by police on the scene after arriving to find out her son had been tragically killed.
Police were called to the three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Elderslie Rd and Rodbourne Rd, Brighton, about 9.25am, with a white Toyota Corolla seen on its side.
The driver of that vehicle, an 18-year-old man from the local area, was found dead in the car.
Tasmania Police Inspector Kathy Bennett said initial investigations suggested the teenager had been driving along Elderslie Rd when a collision occurred with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and turning onto Rodbourne Rd.
The vehicles then hit a third vehicle that was on Rodbourne Rd.
The stretch of road where the crash occurred carries a 100km/h speed limit.
Inspector Bennett said the circumstances of the crash were tragic.
“The local communities know each other’s vehicles ... they try and contact each other if they are aware of an incident,” she said.
“My understanding is the deceased individual’s mother turned up at the scene and police dealt with her at the scene there. It’s a terrible thing to have to come across and have to deal with.
“I’ve got an 18-year-old son myself who’s just got his driver’s licence, so in terms of that I can’t imagine how someone would feel turning up to a scene and finding that out.”
The four occupants of the other two vehicles – a grey Mitsubishi Triton and black Ford Territory – were taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Inspector Bennett said the incident was a “terrible tragedy” to occur at any time, but especially so leading towards Christmas.
In a separate incident, a male motorcyclist was left with serious injuries after a head-on collision with another vehicle on Colebrook Rd, Campania..
Inspector Bennett said the motorcyclist was reported to have been pinned as a result of the crash.
