A  MEMORIAL footbridge for the Queens Domain is a step closer, with tenders called by Hobart City Council.

The walking and cycling bridge will span 200m across the Tasman Highway, connecting the Cenotaph with Soldiers Memorial Avenue.

The project is being timed to coincide with the Anzac Centenary, being completed 100 years after the avenue was planted.

A consultation report will be presented to the council’s parks and recreation committee this week, recommending a development application be lodged.

Among 20 groups consulted were the RSL, Macquarie Point Development Corporation, Government House and cycling groups.

“Stakeholders were generally impressed with the design features and commented that it was contemporary, elegant, functional, respectful and reflective of the place values — both natural and cultural,” the report says.

Issues identified by consultation included traffic during construction, the effect on the 100-year-old trees, safety and graffiti.

The Federal Government allocated $8 million in 2015 from its Anzac Centenary public fund.

A concept design was completed by architects Denton Corker Marshall last year. It aimed to create a symbolic gateway to the city while not competing with the Cenotaph.

“Our approach will acknowledge the bridge as an identifying feature of Hobart,” the concept design report says.

“Experience in designing projects that have acquired iconic status suggests that designs should be elegant, expressive and timeless.”

The bridge, to be lit at night, would work as an extension to Anzac Parade, connecting the Cenotaph and intercity cycleway with the upper Domain, Hobart Aquatic Centre and Soldiers Memorial Avenue.

Further consultation would be done to determine a name for the structure.

The 2013 Queens Domain master plan identified access as a “major constraint” to the park’s use and enjoyment. It recommended six new pedestrian and cycling bridges.
