THE head of TasWater says the relocation of Hobart’s Macquarie Point wastewater treatment plant will cost more than the current estimate of $140m.
The plant needs to be relocated to allow large-scale development - such as the state government’s proposed $750m stadium - to proceed.
During a government business enterprise hearing TasWater confirmed the wastewater treatment plant was on track to be relocated to Selfs Point by 2025.
The project has been costed in recent years at $140m, with the state government to contribute $100m.
However TasWater CEO George Theo said the cost would be higher.
“That was the estimate back in 2016. Obviously that estimate in the last six years is not the same now. We just finished a detailed business case. We will be going out into the market in the new year,” Mr Theo said.
When asked by Labor MLC Josh Willie about an updated cost, Mr Theo declined to provide a figure, citing commercial in confidence.
“We are going to be in a competitive market soon for construction bids. we don’t want to create and environment where people are priced to that,” Mr Theo said.
The committee also heard water restrictions were unlikely to be imposed on Hobart this summer.
