As soon as she was tall enough to see over the kitchen counter, Brianna Doyle was whisking away, baking cakes and other after-school treats for her family.
Fast forward nearly a decade and the Hobart College student just finished her latest creation: her own 17th birthday cake.
Brianna is among hundreds who were nominated for Tassie’s Best Home Baker on the Mercury’s Facebook page, with readers whipping up everything from sourdough to five-layer cakes while in lockdown.

Brianna was nominated by her mum Robyn, who said: “I especially loved my swimming birthday cake and Mother’s Day sponge with homemade lemon curd”.
The Year 12 student credits her mum for her skills in the kitchen.
“I first got into baking because my parents never had sugary foods in the house, so if I ever wanted dessert I had to make it,” Brianna recalled.
“I love baking because you get to make it look pretty and then you get to eat it. I like how it makes my family happy when they get to eat delicious cakes and baked goods.”
Brianna says she never took a home economics class at school; preferring to learn from her mum and “just experimenting”.
So much so, the creation she’s most proud of is something worthy of a MasterChef immunity challenge.
“My best creation might’ve been a five-layer soil profile cake with a different type of cake for each layer for my dad, who’s a professor in geology and soil,” Brianna said.
“That took me about five or six hours over two days.”
