THE environmental watchdog’s approval of a new Tasmanian salmon hatchery has been welcomed by the State Government as a parliamentary fish farming inquiry nears its submission deadline.
Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Authority on Friday gave the green light to salmon giant Tassal to proceed with a $46 million hatchery in the state’s Central Highlands.
The hatchery is planned to recirculate water, which would allow it to use less freshwater and improve fish health.
EPA MAKES CALL ON SALMON HATCHERY
Primary Industries Minister Guy Barnett said the proposed hatchery would benefit the state’s salmon industry and employ up to 14 people.
