As school fees continue to soar year on year, saving for education can be a daunting task for parents and carers across the state.
With Tasmania’s most wealthiest schools charging an eye-watering $20,000 for tuition families are coughing up a significant amount of cash to make sure their children are getting quality education.
Although many of these intuitions feature a string of lavish perks worth a hefty price tag, there are a number of local schools offering private education for thousands of dollars less — just over the road.
21. St Aloysius Catholic College
St Aloysis is a girls and boys Catholic college that is spread across two campuses in Hobart – kindergarten to Grade 4 at Kingston Beach and Grade 5 to Grade 10 at Huntingfield. Fees comes in at $1880 for kinder and sit at $4600 for Year 10. The school will expand its learning for Year 11 and Year 12 students in 2023.
20. Sacred Heart Catholic College, New Town
Sacred Heart Catholic College offers learning from kindergarten to Year 10 in New Town. The school was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest colleges in Hobart that now boasts both historical buildings and modern specialist facilities including an award-winning playground, indoor and outdoor sport hubs and a media arts centre. Fees start at $2400 for kindergarten and come in at $4600 for Year 9 and Year 10.
19. Eastside Lutheran College, Warrane
Eastside Lutheran College is a co-ed school catering for students from kindergarten to Year 12. School fees start at $1500 for Kinder and go up to $4500 for Year 10 and $4900 for Year 11 and 12. The college situated on Hobart’s Eastern Shores at Warrane teaches small classes of around 25 children or less and hires specialist teachers for subjects including music, PE, language, art, drama and ICT.
18. St Patrick’s College, Launceston
St Patrick’s College is a Catholic co-educational school in Launceston that caters for middle and secondary learning. The school is spread across 16 hectares and features two gymnasiums, tennis courts, a swimming pool, theatre and photography and recording studios. School fees come in at $4400 annually for all year levels.
17. MacKillop Catholic College, Mornington
Situated on Hobart’s Eastern Shore at Mornington, MacKillop Catholic College offers co-educational learning for secondary years with fees coming in at $4335 for all grades. The school was founded in 1994 and now caters for around 580 students offering subjects such as Food Technology, Drama, Construction, Dance and Fine Arts.
16. St Brendan-Shaw College, Devonport
Devonport’s St Brendan-Shaw College was founded in 1960 and is a catholic school that caters for Year 7 through to Year 12 on a seven hectare campus that overlooks the Bass Strait. Yearly tuition starts at $3486 for Year 7 and 8, $3627 for Year 9 and 10 and $3763 for senior grades. St Brendan-Shaw boasts a gym space with over 800 seats, a hairdressing trade training centre and a therapeutic chill out room fitted with dream-foam and KloudSacs.

Located in Latrobe on the outskirts of Devonport, Geneva Christian College is situated on 50 hectares of farm and bushland that was founded in 1967. School fees start at $2720 for kindergarten and $3520 for Prep to Year 12.
14. Hilliard Christian School, Hobart
Hilliard Christian School is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian School in Hobart that offers coeducational learning for primary and secondary students. The school was founded in 1901 and features a number of playgrounds, basketball courts, indoor sports hall and design, art and hospital facilities. The school charges $2358 for primary education and $3390 for high school learning.
13. Australian Christian College – Hobart, Burnie and Launceston
The Australian Christian College offers coeducational learning from kindergarten to Year 10 at Geilston Bay in Hobart, Somerset in Burnie and Launceston. The school charges $3100 for yearly learning at all campuses.
12. Northern Christian School, Bridgewater
Northern Christian School offers education for children in kindergarten to Year 6 and is set on 20 acres of land with views of the Derwent Valley and Mount Wellington. School fees start at $1466 for kinder and $3072 for primary students each year.

11. Circular Head Christian School, Circular Head
Located on eight hectares of land at Smithton in North West Tasmania, Circular Head Christian School comes in at number 11 offering yearly tuition for $2820 for junior learning (kindergarten to Year 5), $3240 for middle school (Year 6 to Year 9) and $3720 for senior college students (Year 10 to Year 12). The campus features a performing arts area, vegetable gardens, an aviary, science centre and technology and hospitality centre.
10. Corpus Christi Catholic School, Bellerive
Founded in 1936, Corpus Christi Catholic School is located in Bellerive that caters for 450 students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school charges $1940 for Kinder and $2077 for primary years.
9. Star of the Sea Catholic College, George Town
George Town’s Star of the Sea Catholic College was founded in 1957 and provides education from Kinder through to Year 10. The school charges $1795 for primary year levels and offers a challenging curriculum that includes learning areas such as Religious Education, English, mathematics, science, Humanities and the Arts. Middle school fees come in at $2400 for Years 7 to 10.
8. St Brigid’s Catholic School, New Norfolk
New Norfolk’s St Brigid’s Catholic School is the eighth cheapest primary school in Tasmania that offers education from kindergarten to Grade 6. The school is situated on the banks of the Derwent River on a three-hectare site that boasts a community hall, library, multi-age adventure playground and bike track. Fees start at $1543 and go to $1905 for Grade 6.
7. St John’s Catholic School, Richmond
St John’s Catholic School has been offering education for kindergarten to Year 6 in the picturesque town of Richmond for 178 years. The campus is nestled next to the town’s famous bridge that caters for 344 students at $1885 per year.

6. John Paul II Catholic School, Rokeby
John Paul II Catholic School is a private Catholic primary school in Rokeby that offers education from kindergarten to Year 6. Founded in 1983 the school charges $1755 for Prep to Grade 2, $1825 for Grade 3 and $1877 for Grades 4 to 6.
The school features a bike track, a new school hall for specialty music and drama classes as well as an outdoor nature play area.
5. St Anthony’s Catholic School, Burnie
St Anthony’s Catholic School is a single-streamed institution set across five acres of grounds in Burnie with eight classes across kindergarten to Grade 6. The school features an adventure trail, swings, undercover playground and indigenous spiritual garden on site and charges $1816 a year for tuition across all years, according to Good Schools.
4. Stella Maris Catholic Primary School, Burnie
Situated outside the heart of Burnie, Stella Maris Catholic Primary School caters for Grades 1 through to 6 with tuition fees coming in at $1785 plus levies for all year levels. 433 students attend the 154-year-old two-stream Catholic Parish school that sits beside Marist Regional College.
3. St Therese’s Catholic School, Moonah
Moonah’s St Therese’s Catholic School is Tasmania’s third cheapest private primary school offering learning for kindergarteners and primary schoolers at $1780 a year. The school boasts creative and spacious play areas including a netball/basketball court, a tennis court and adventure playground.

St Finn Barr’s Catholic School is a coeducational school that caters to students from kindergarten to Year 6 for just $1650 per year. The Invermay institution has been running for 125 years and holds specialist programs for students each week including art, music, drama and physical education.

Sacred Heart Catholic School is the cheapest private primary school in Tasmania, offering yearly fees at just $1515 for kinder and $1604 for Prep to Grade 6 for young children in the North West of the state. The school is situated within the Mersey Leven Parish in Ulverstone and was founded in 1889.
