Filmed in Tasmania’s rugged west, the highly anticipated Australian version of the global hit reality TV series, Alone, will premiere next month, SBS has announced.
The show will see 10 survivalists plunged into deep isolation on the west coast, where they are left to fend for themselves. When participants reach their limits, they can “tap out” and the last person standing wins $250,000.
Without any creature comforts, they have only themselves to rely on for food, water, shelter and warmth, and each of them are responsible for documenting their experience.
The lone Tasmanian contestant is Chris, 39, an Iraq war veteran living with PTSD.
The series, produced by ITV Studios Australia, will premiere with a special double episode on SBS at 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 29.
The broadcaster secured the rights to produce an Australian version of the show after the US and Scandinavian seasons of Alone were viewed for a total of more than 10 million hours on SBS On Demand.
SBS head of unscripted Joseph Maxwell said it was the most successful “factual franchise” in the history of SBS’s streaming platform.
“Alone Australia is raw, authentic, and truly unique,” he said.
“At its core, it’s about people – what it is that challenges us, drives us, and motivates us as human beings.
“The relentless effects of nature, hunger, and solitude result in a very real examination of who we are as people.”
ITV Studios Australia head of factual Ben Ulm and executive producer Riima Daher described the series as “the real deal”.
“There are no production tricks, just ten individuals making ten self-shot documentaries,” they said.
