The minimum was hit at 8.01am.
Weatherwatch meteorologist Anthony Cornelius made the observation this morning and took to social media.
“Tasmania just recorded its coldest morning ever on record,” he wrote.
“The previous record was -13.0C in Tarraleah Village on the 30th of June 1983.
“However this morning, Liawanee fell to a pipe-shattering -14.2C.
The Buraeu of Meteorology confirmed climatologists are currently checking a provisional new all-time minimum temperature record for Tasmania.
“Liawenee recorded a minimum temperature of -14.2C at 8:01 am this
morning, which is provisionally the all-time coldest temperature recorded in
Tasmania.” a spokesman said.
“The previous Tasmanian minimum temperature record of -13.0C was recorded
by three sites (Butlers Gorge, Tarraleah and Shannon) on June 30, 1983.
“The Liawenee weather station was not open at the time of the 1983 record, as it
was first installed in January 2001. The previous coldest temperature recorded
at Liawenee was -12.2C on July 9, 2013.”
“The low temperature was reached through a combination of factors. A cold air
mass remains from the weather system that brought snow to Launceston earlier
in the week, snow remains on the ground at Liawenee, and clear skies and light
winds overnight allowed the temperature to drop rapidly.
And it wasn’t just Liawenee breaking records.
“Strahan Airport also recorded its lowest August temperature on record
overnight, reaching -2.8C which was lower than -2.5C from August 25, 2018,” the spokesman said.
Icy roads may make driving conditions dangerous in most districts this morning so please take care. Temperatures at 5am (pictured)were below zero in many locations, especially the Central Plateau and the Upper Derwent Valley.
