THE Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has claimed a major win at a national music and art awards.
The 2020 Art Music Awards event was celebrated in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday night, which saw awards given in categories such as Work of The Year and Excellence in Music Education.
The event acknowledges the achievements of composers, performers and educators in the genres of contemporary classical music, jazz, improvisation, sound art and experimental music.
The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra was the recipient for the Luminary Award for an Organisation, for long-term commitment offering professional development for Australian composers and musicians, as well as promoting gender equity through opportunities for female conductors.
Tasmanian pianist Michael Kieran Harvey was awarded the state Luminary Award for supporting the Tasmanian new music community through teaching, performance and recording.
In her acceptance speech, TSO chief executive Caroline Sharpen said it was “an enormous honour” to receive the award on behalf of the organisation.
“Developing aspiring musicians, composers and conductors, succession planning for our industry, is work that we love,” she said.
“And we have hundreds of reasons to feel proud of it as we see wonderful careers
Unfold.”
Ms Sharpen had several people to thank for their contributions to the TSO.
“Thank you so much to our program leaders, Jenny Compton and Simon Rogers,” she said.
“Also, the incredible musicians of the TSO, who share their wisdom and experience with such generosity and grace. Thank you very much.”
