Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie is encouraging Australians to take the Poppy Pledge ahead of Anzac Day

Anzac Day services may have been cancelled, but Australians can still take part in a moving dawn tribute in their own driveways.

ON an Anzac Day like no other, thousands of Australians will still rise before dawn for a tribute to be staged from driveways, front yards and balconies.

The Poppy Pledge movement is encouraging people to pay their respects this Anzac Day by gathering at the front of their homes at 5.55am for a socially distanced minute’s silence at 6am.

TASSIE NURSE TO DELIVER ANZAC DAY ADDRESS

Army veteran and Tasmanian independent Senator Jacqui Lambie has thrown her support behind the initiative, conceived by Justin Wilbur, the son of an American Vietnam War veteran, and veterans Bill Sowry and Terry James.

The trio were looking for a way to mark Anzac Day, following the cancellation of all services due to coronavirus.

Senator Lambie’s office has created an interactive map that places a poppy near the address of every participating household.

By 6pm on Sunday, just over 14,000 people had registered for the home Dawn Service.

“We thought it would be fun to do something interactive for kids to get them involved,” Senator Lambie said.

While the driveway tribute will lack the formality of official ceremonies, Senator Lambie thinks the initiative will result in a moving tribute to veterans.

“Our aim is to encourage people to get down their driveway at dawn on Anzac Day with their families and give a minute’s silence to show respect,” she said.

“It will be an Anzac Day people will never forget. Without being at the Cenotaph, veterans will still have their rum and coffee, doing what they normally do with their family.

“We don’t care if you are in your dressing gown or your ugg boots or you’re in your suit … we just want you on you lawn or on your driveway.”

Mr Wilbur said he came up with the Poppy Pledge concept while having his morning coffee the day after the Anzac Day cancellation was announced.

“This is really simple to do ... if you can walk out your front door you can be involved,” he said.

The RSL is also urging Australians to rise at dawn on Saturday to observe a minute’s silence outside their homes as the sun rises.
