Coronavirus: The state of our borders

THE state government has revealed what states Tasmania will likely open its borders to at the end of October.

The State Controller will operate on public health advice to open to low-risk jurisdictions; South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, the ACT and possibly NSW by the end of next month.

Borders between South Australia and NSW and the ACT opened last week, bringing an end to its mandatory 14 day quarantine.

But the state government said it was taking a cautious approach to reopening Tasmania’s borders.

“As we’ve consistently said, by taking a sensible transition we are able to cautiously assess and monitor risk, and scale up or scale back as required to keep Tasmanians safe,” a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson outlined the government’s three-step plan to ease restrictions, including allowing seasonal workers into the state for the upcoming season.

Step two in the process, the State Controller take advice on reopening to the low-risk jurisdictions.

“This enables adequate time to ensure the transmission risk with Victoria on other states is as low as it can be, and ensures the necessary systems and processes are in place,” the spokesperson said.

“As part of step three Public Health will provide advice on border restrictions with Victoria or other hotspot areas post the December 1 date in line with the national aspiration for the country to be open for travel from safe jurisdictions by Christmas.”
