Update 8.45am: Authorities are searching for a missing man in his 70s believed to have boarded a vessel alone.

An unoccupied boat washed ashore at Kingston Beach yesterday around 2.05pm.

Acting Inspector Peter Borish said a significant search of the area would continue today after marine resources and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were used in yesterday’s efforts.

“Information to date indicates the man boarded the vessel alone at the Derwent Park Marina and departed around 7am,” Acting Inspector Borish said.

“The man, aged in his 70s, has now been reported as missing by his family.”

Anyone with information that may assist the police investigation is asked to contact police on 131 444 – quote ESCAD 211-02102024.

October 3, 8.10am update: A crew of rescuers has already rallied at Kingston Beach in efforts to find answers to a washed up white flybridge cruiser.

Surf Life Savers once again mobilised on the beach and will assist efforts alongside the search mission headed by Tasmania Police in the Dauntless.

The search has been ongoing since yesterday afternoon when the boat washed up on the beach.

The Dauntless towed it away around 6pm last night.

Tasmania Police are set to provide an update of the overnight search shortly.

October 2, 6:15pm update: A police marine vessel is towing the mystery boat away, which has still not yet been claimed.

Authorities remain at the scene, as the search continues.

4:40pm: A mystery boat washing ashore at Kingston Beach has sparked the interest of local authorities, who are now on the hunt for the owner.

Police say the white flybridge cruiser, with an inflatable dingy attached to it, came ashore just after 2pm today.

Dozens of locals are watching on, inspecting the boat and waiting on any updates.

An extensive land and sea search of the area is now underway: The Westpac helicopter is flying low, Surf Life Saver dinghies are on the beachfront to assist and police are on hand.

Anyone who may have information is urged to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444.

Two young men accused of stealing spree

October 2, 10.30am: Police believe two young men were involved in multiple stealing offences, including burglaries at small supermarkets in Risdon Vale and Lindisfarne over the past two weeks.

Officers say the men were arrested believed to be involved in the burglaries.

It’s alleged stolen motor vehicles were driven into the stores, significant damage was caused and property was stolen.

Detectives report searching a property at Risdon Vale as part of the investigation and recovering a stolen motorcycle.

The two men, a 23-year-old and 21-year-old, were jointly charged with multiple offences including 7x motor vehicle stealing, 4x burglary, 4x stealing, and 5x attempted burglary.

The 21-year-old was also charged with 3x disqualified driving, 2x evade police (aggravated circumstances), 1x dangerous driving, and 1x reckless driving.

The men are expected to appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Police believe a third man was involved in the Lindisfarne incident.

Driver charged after alleged Grand Final hit and run

September 30, 12pm: Two Huon Valley drivers have been charged with drink driving over separate crashes on Grand Final night, one of which is accused of a hit and run.

Police say a motorist was attempting to turn into their driveway about 4:45pm on Saturday, when they were struck from behind.

It’s alleged the driver behind the turning car quickly left the scene, but was later found by police.

Authorities say the man, a 45-year-old from Ranelagh, returned a breath test of 0.270, which is more than five times the legal limit.

He was charged with drink driving and failing to stop and will face court at a later date.

Meanwhile in a second incident in the area on the night, police attended a crash on Conlans Road South about 8:55pm.

“A 20-year-old male from Huonville, the sole occupant of the vehicle lost control of his vehicle [crashing into] a guard rail before coming to rest down the embankment,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

“The driver was taken into police custody where he returned a breath alcohol content reading of 0.119 and was charged with drink driving and bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.”

No one was injured in either crash.
